Feeding Your Japanese Chin
The very most important decision you make regarding your Chin may very well
be ....... What to feed him.
What you feed him will determine his health, the condition of his coat,
shedding, his teeth, his energy, how much he poops, how much time and
money you will spend at the vet's office, his happiness and...
even how long he will live.
Don't skimp here. Chins are small dogs and they don't eat very much. It's very
important that what he does eat, contains the things he needs to thrive. Good dog
food costs more, and is harder to find. But they will need to eat less, and you will save
money in the long run.
Most grocery store dog food is made with 4D meat (dead, dying, diseased, disabled).
Other ingredients can include vats of old rancid restaurant grease, other animals that
your vet has 'put to sleep', rancid grain, road kill, dangerous chemicals and more!
After this mess has been extruded, they must spray the kibble with flavoring to make a
otherwise distasteful product palatable. Then the product is preserved with chemicals
such as Ethoxyquin, a chemical that in 1997 the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine
requested that manufacturers voluntarily reduce the maximum level by half! This is
only a brief description of what some companies are putting in their pet food.
Below are some links to information about pet food. Do some research. It is a very
important decision.
READ THE LABEL. Look for organic foods, and foods that are baked or dehydrated
and not extruded. Look for ingredients like real meat, fruits, vegetables, probiotics,
barley, oats, flaxseed.
Steer away from by-products, non specific meat sources, corn, mill run grain, soy, salt,
BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin.
Some of the better brands to look for include:
CANADIE, NATURAL BALANCE, WELLNESS, TIMBERWOLF, CHICKEN SOUP FOR
THE ADULT DOG, FLINT RIVER RANCH, CALIFORNIA NATURAL.
If you have trouble finding a pet food store who carries these brands (even Petsmart
and Petco don't carry most of them) check out Pet Food Direct
