The Chin Sneeze
This can sound awful, but is harmless.
Your dog may stand still, extend his neck and....
SNORK-SNORK-SNORK
He seems to be choking and gasping all at once! What's happening??
Sometimes, especially when they are excited, or after eating or drinking, the
rapid inhalation of air can cause spasms in the back of their throat, making it
difficult for them to inhale. Kinda like if you suck on a straw too hard. The
spasms will stop after your dog swallows a few times, and no medical treatment
is necessary. This condition will correct itself usually in less that a minute.
You can help him swallow by gently rubbing his throat, closing his nostrils for a
few seconds, or taking him outside for some fresh air. He will be back to normal,
running off to play within a few minutes.
There ARE other conditions that mimic reverse sneezing, including a collapsing
trachea, elongated palette and heart disease. As always, if you are in doubt,
please consult your veterinarian.
